The Grand Island Lions Club on July 19 held its 59th annual Special Kids Picnic at the Buffalo Launch Club, an event that brought in over 1,100 kids with special needs and their chaperones. The kids got the opportunity to enjoy entertainment that included boat rides, pony rides, Shriner minikar rides, face painting and baton twirlers.

Vocalist Mike Reno met guitarist Paul Dean in 1979 and, just one year later, the duo had a hit record via their band, Loverboy. Working alongside Doug Johnson on keyboards, Matt Frenette on drums and Scott Smith on bass, Reno and Dean followed that up in 1981 with "Get Lucky." The album spawned the band's biggest hit in "Working for the Weekend."

Grand Island soils to be tested for pollutants

Soil samples will be collected from homes in the southeastern part of Grand Island in August, said Jackie James-Creedon, executive director of Citizen Science Community Resources. That soil will be tested for 130 different types of contaminants, including benzene, pesticides, heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
