Representatives of the United Way of Greater Niagara held a press conference Friday morning to announce details of "Go for the Goal," a fundraiser the organization is holding Friday, Nov. 3, to help reach its campaign goal. The media gathering was held at the Hard Rock Cafe, Niagara Falls USA - site of the benefit event.
From 5-9 p.m. guests can win door prizes, spin a prize wheel and purchase a beverage from a yet-to-be-named celebrity bartender. Tickets are $10 at the door.
UWGN Director of Resource Development Erika Kastel said, "This event announces the final race to reach our goal for our 2017 campaign, that is $1,150,000."
UWGN AFL/CIO labor liaison and campaign coordinator Bill Jakobi said, "When you make a contribution to the United Way, your money is raised here locally and stays here locally."
He explained, "Our goal is to raise the dollars to fund 25 members agencies that provide 42 different programs throughout the community."
The UWGN website states the agency, in 2015, provided emergency food to 2,597 individuals, domestic violence programs for 879 people and mentoring for 244 children. Additionally, 5,366 seniors were given opportunities to give back to their community, 2,943 youth attended Boy Scout or Girl Scout events, and 4,078 people received help with prescription drug costs.
"United Way aims to support organizations and programs that fall under the platforms of education, income and financial stability. ... To strengthen the community today and tomorrow," Kastel said.
"We're reaching out to all our union friends, local business, companies. We need your support in helping us achieve our goal this year, so our agencies can provide the services that are needed in this community," Jakobi said. "Without your help, they wouldn't be able to do what they do. Anything you can do to help us is greatly appreciated."
The UWGN campaign runs through Nov. 30. It began with the annual "Make a Difference Day" on Sept. 13.
Jakobi said the agency is about halfway to its financial goal.
Last year's UWGN goal was $1,037,000, which the agency successfully raised through community contributions and events such as "Go for the Goal."
Hard Rock Cafe, Niagara Falls USA, is located at 333 Prospect St., Niagara Falls.
