Oh, sure, when you watch Artpark's version of "Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella" next week, it will be shiny, smooth and, in a word, magical. But just because it looks effortless on stage doesn't mean the production work behind the scenes is easy.

The "Road Bros," one of Rand McNally/USA Today's Best Small Towns in America travel teams, will receive a police escort down Center Street to a gathering at The Silo Restaurant. There, they'll find a "rousing welcome."

"The Fairy House Festival" returns to Artpark on June 9 and 10. From noon until 5 p.m. each day, the event will feature art activities; hundreds of fairy houses designed by schools, Scout troops and community youth groups; special dance performances; artist-created exhibits; storytelling; and magical surprises. Daredevil Nik Wallenda says fees to the New York State parks department and to Ontario's Niagara Parks Commission will be paid by the end of the week as required by his contracts with the two agencies.

Wallenda, speaking Tuesday to Bullet News Niagara, scoffed at the suggestion that permits are not in place and that his walk June 15 over the Horseshoe Falls is in danger of not happening.

"I don't know where this stuff comes from," he said. "There are so many totally wrong stories out there right now. It's unbelievable."

Old Falls Street, USA, will be the center of "Side Show" activities on June 15. From 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., day-long festivities will spotlight Nik Wallenda's historic tightrope walk over Niagara Falls, which will be shown on two outdoor jumbo screens. The "Side Show" features tightrope walks and aerial moves from Charm City Movement Arts (from Baltimore) and other circus-themed performances from members of Deep Roots Niagara throughout the day, a petting zoo, as well as live music, festive food and beverage concessions, and more than 20 local merchandise and food vendors.

Lewiston Peace Garden lives up to its name

The Lewiston Peace Garden, located at 476 Center St., has definitely evolved over the years. Eva Nicklas from the Lewiston Council on the Arts explained how it began as a "funky gravel parking lot" and, after years of hard work, is now recognized as an International Peace Garden by the International Peace Garden Foundation.

"It's a beautiful green space that all of Lewiston is proud of," Nicklas said.

The Peace Garden contains a fountain, a stage, different kinds of flowering plants, and memory bricks throughout.

The garden has been host to various events over the years, including belly dancing, poetry readings, chainsaw artists, and fundraising events. But this summer will be different.

Tollhouse added to Lewiston Welcome Center

Last August, a tollhouse used at Lewiston's suspension bridge to Canada was gifted to the village. The building was placed in the driveway of Clerk Anne Welch whose husband, Bob, a Historical Association of Lewiston volunteer, worked to refurbish the unit.
