Though he's performed professionally for more than a decade, and shared stages with some of the music industry's top acts, Marc Scibilia says his career is now finally beginning.
"I would say this release of this (new) EP is the beginning," he says. "This is the starting point right here. I would say everything up to this point was a learning experience. This is, I would say, the beginning of my career in a lot of ways."
For the better part of eight years - since about the time he graduated from Grand Island High School - Scibilia has lived and worked in Nashville, Tenn. In that time, he's worked with acclaimed musicians, producers and engineers. The culmination of those collaborations, Scibilia says, can be heard on his six-song eponymous EP, which he'll release this week through Hickory Records (Sony ATV).
"I've been working with players that I've always wanted to work with. I've been working with a producer that I've really enjoyed a lot of the records that he's made. I've just essentially surrounded myself with the best people that I can find," Scibilia says. "It's been a real learning experience the last couple years."
"It's been an amazing experience," he says.
Scibilia says his sound is "a little more experienced." Of his music, he says, "I feel like it has a bigger context."
His lyrics, which in the past have touched on faith and politics, are more upbeat. Scibilia's single, "How Bad We Need Each Other," was recently included in a key episode of the hit FOX series "Bones."
"I would say it's a pretty optimistic grouping of songs," Scibilia says.
"I think it's the best thing I've done up to this point," he says. "I'm really looking forward to recording more. I'm looking forward to completing (a full-length album)."
Scibilia is also looking forward to his return home. He'll headline a show June 7 at The Tralf in downtown Buffalo.
"I really appreciate - in advance - the people that are going to come out," he says. "I'm excited."
Scibilia will be accompanied by Michael Rhodes, a bass player who has performed with the likes of Sheryl Crow and Steve Winwood.
"Michael has been a key part of my development," Scibilia says. "Michael is one of the most recorded bass players in Nashville."
"That's one of the most exciting things," Scibilia adds. "He brings a big presence."
"I have an amazing team of people around me, who really appreciate me for who I am, and all the twists and turns I may want to take them on," Scibilia says. "And we've only just begun the twists and turns."
Marc Scibilia performs Thursday, June 7, at The Tralf Music Hall, 622 Main St., Buffalo. The show begins at 7 p.m. Vinnie DeRosa will open. Tickets are $12 in advance and $16 at the door. Call 852-2860 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.
