Town Supervisor Nathan McMurray advised the public near the conclusion of Monday's Grand Island Town Board meeting that a national truck stop chain has made a submission to the Planning Board for what he called "a massive truck stop/gas station" on Whitehaven Road.

Grand Island coach Ron Krysztof will tell anyone his team's ability to shoot the 3-pointer is critical. Wednesday night versus Niagara-Wheatfield, they only made six, a little below their season average, but all six came at key times to spark a Vikings win.
The Vikings defeated the Falcons 51-30 Wednesday night for their second win in a row.

For the third year in a row, the Battle of the Border brought talent from north of the border in Ontario to Niagara Falls High School to face off against some of the best that Western New York has to offer. Although only three Canadian teams played in this year's classic, the players from Canada represented their side of the border well, winning two of the three games. There were also some familiar faces from last year's battle who returned to the Wolvarena for another bought with an American high school. Here is a full recap from the action on Saturday.

Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce President Jennifer Pauly has announced a new addition to her staff. Caitlin Fager started on Monday as the event and membership manager. She replaces Christina Crane, who took another position in late 2017.

"With the renovation, the capital improvement project that happened with the school, the art rooms, the whole fine arts wing got significant renovations, and this beautiful atrium was added on," said art teacher Brett Coppins, Class of 1992. "Once that happened, it got us to thinking about how can we bring it to the next level. We really wanted to rename this section of the school the 'Center for the Arts.' "

She joined FOX's "Sleepy Hollow" in season three, portraying FBI agent Sophie Foster. More notably, and most recently, she has been a recurring guest star on "The Flash." Camacho arrived in season three as the portal-popping Gypsy: a reluctant hero, metahuman bounty hunter from another dimension, and love interest for Cisco.

Niagara-Wheatfield and St. Joes played the most hyped up hockey game scheduled for Wednesday night, as the No. 6 ranked team in the state faced the No. 9 ranked team in the state, respectively. After 50 minutes of play, though, there was no winner and no loser.
The Falcons and Marauders tied, 1-1, Wednesday night at the Hockey Outlet. N-W and St. Joes came in as the second and third place teams in Division, respectively.

In basketball they say you live and die by the 3-pointer. Niagara-Wheatfield's girls basketball team didn't necessarily live or die by it Monday night versus Kenmore East, but when they made them, they were in big spots.
The Falcons defeated the Kenmore East Bulldogs, 60-50, Monday night at Niagara-Wheatfield. It was the first time the two teams met all season.

It's rare for an eighth-grader to play on a varsity team, let alone start. The Niagara Falls Wolverines are in rare company, as they start two eighth-graders. Saturday afternoon at Aquinas, eighth-grader Willie Lightfoot was a key in sealing the Wolverines victory.
The Falls defeated the Lil' Irish in their third road game in as many days, 68-55.

It opened with remarks by resident Paulette Glasgow, a familiar face at past meetings who returned to this session following illness. Glasgow, a member of the Lewiston Taxpayers Accountability and Action Alliance, raised the issue of transparency as she proceeded to criticize the Town Board's lack of naming, but summarily approving a large number of town appointments, at its reorganization meeting earlier this month.

Representatives from the Old Fort Niagara Association, Youngstown Volunteer Fire Department, New York State Assembly, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and the Niagara County Legislature dedicated a new fire trailer at Old Fort Niagara on Thursday. Officials gathered in the parking lot near the fort's Visitor Center to announce the completion of the project, which has been underway for several years.

On Friday morning, the Lewiston Police Department led a joint active shooter drill on the Lewiston-Porter campus. The LPD teamed with Niagara County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Border Patrol and New York State Police, in conjunction with local fire and EMS companies. Access to the schools was restricted during the duration of the event.

On Thursday, Section VI boys golf Chairman Nate Leary announced that the section would hold its first annual Section VI boys golf team championship. The team aspect will be held alongside the annual individual championship and state qualifier. So, the tournament will not only crown an individual Section VI Champion and eight state tournament qualifiers, but also a Section VI team champion, something that hasn't been awarded in "many decades."

As a teacher and a coach at Niagara-Wheatfield, coach Steve Miller has a lot that he has to take care of. Miller also has a family, which he cares for dearly. This summer, though, he was dealt a tough blow.
Miller's wife, Krista, was diagnosed with breast cancer this past summer for the second time and he's been at the forefront taking care of his family. Along with that, he continues to help coach the Niagara-Wheatfield boys basketball team, which his son Cam Miller also plays for. The team has been nothing but supportive for the family, knowing what their coach and teammate is going through.
