Coalition report faults localities on executive sessions

A report released Thursday by the Buffalo Niagara Coalition for Open Government has claimed a number of municipalities in both Erie and Niagara counties are out of compliance with state Open Meetings Laws when it comes to executive sessions.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Family & Children's Service of Niagara coordinated the fifth annual Domestic Violence Ribbon Walk on Tuesday. Staff, local elected leaders and community members gathered on Third Street to take a collective stand against domestic violence. As they walked, they tied purple ribbons on the trees between Main and Niagara streets.

The Lewiston Town Board gave its OK on a new a solar facility under its new solar law on Monday. Specifically, it approved a special use permit to allow for construction of a proposed utility scale solar energy project on property owned by Town Building/Zoning Inspector Tim Masters at 1897 Swann Road.

The awardees were lauded for recent beautification efforts on Center Street. Ellicott Development breaks ground on Village of Lewiston plaza site

On Thursday afternoon, coworkers and local elected leaders joined Ellicott Development CEO William Paladino as he broke ground on property overlooking a new plaza project. His company, in 2012, purchased a 4.1-acre parcel of land at Center, North Eighth and Onondaga streets. Three buildings offering a mix of commercial and culinary tenants, as well as rental spaces, are expected to open in the next year.

The 61st annual Niagara County Peach Festival kicked off in fine fashion on Thursday, with family and friends flocking to Academy Park in the Village of Lewiston. They wanted to get their first taste of peach shortcake and Johnnie Ryan peach pop, play games for prizes, eat at the dozen-plus food stands and, of course, ride the rides.
