Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced the New York State Police and local law enforcement agencies across the state will increase patrols and crack down on drunk and drugged driving and other traffic infractions this 4th of July weekend. State troopers will conduct sobriety checkpoints and target reckless and aggressive driving statewide to keep New York highways safe during one of the busiest summer holidays for travel.

New York state is now accepting applications for $2.7 billion in funding for income-eligible renters who fell behind on rent or utility payments during the COVID-19 pandemic. National Fuel Gas Distribution Corp. is encouraging all eligible customers to apply for up to 12 months in back rent and up to three months of future rent payments, as well as up to 12 months of overdue gas bill payments.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced federal legislation, which includes $1.7 million to help small businesses in Western New York, has crossed an initial legislative hurdle. A House Appropriations subcommittee approved a bill including $950,000 for the Westminster Economic Development Initiative (WEDI) to support expansion of the West Side Bazaar, and $750,000 for the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at SUNY Buffalo State to help small businesses in Western New York expand e-commerce and grow an online presence.

Acquest told to go back to the drawing board

A positive declaration was issued calling for Acquest to prepare a supplemental draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on its proposed 1.1-million-square-foot distribution facility at 2780 Long Road. The town voted to redesignate itself as lead agency for review of a revised version of the project. The site is where Amazon had wanted to build a similar facility until it withdrew last August.
