DEC reminds anglers of special fishing regulations in effect for upcoming fishing seasons

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation on Saturday reminded anglers to always consult the fishing regulations guide to ensure they are complying with the seasonal restrictions and waterbody-specific rules before heading out onto the water.

DEC announces new recreational fishing regulations for summer flounder

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced new recreational saltwater fishing regulations, effective immediately, for the summer flounder (fluke) season that starts May 1. DEC said these changes will provide more opportunities for anglers by extending the season a total of 12 fishing days to Oct. 9, and decreasing the minimum size limit by half an inch.

HAL: Rare painting of Frontenac seen publicly for first time

Dr. Michael Hess, a prominent Lockport dentist, drove to Lewiston on Thursday and shared a painting he owns with a group of enthusiastic volunteers who were astounded with the quality, accuracy and rarity of the artwork. It is the only known illustration of the French vessel Frontenac landing in Lewiston on Dec. 6, 1678, with Father Louis Hennepin aboard.
Missing kayaker identified

Park Police have identified a missing kayaker as 54-year-old Paul Hahn of Amherst. It is believed that Hahn launched his kayak at Golden Hill State Park between Friday, April 22, and Monday, April 25l went out onto Lake Ontario, and has not been seen since.

DiNapoli: Local sales tax collections up 21% in first quarter of 2022

Local government sales tax collections grew by 21.1%, or $901 million, in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year, according to a report released by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. Collections for the three-month period totaled nearly $5.2 billion, with growth at least partially driven by inflation, which hit a 40-year-high in March.

Higgins: $36 million+ in additional HEAP funding available to New Yorkers

It might be almost May, but it is still snowing in Buffalo. To help Western New Yorkers with the cost of heating bills, Congressman Brian Higgins announced $36 million in additional federal funding to New York state for the Home Energy Assistance Program. This latest award brings the total funding provided to New Yorkers for HEAP to over $918 million, the largest state allocation in the nation.
