The world famous Niagara Falls will be dark from 8:30 until 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, in honor of Earth Hour, a global initiative aimed at drawing attention to the issue of climate change. The event urges the turning off all non-essential light by individuals, businesses and organizations around the world.

For the second straight year, the Club Managers Association of America's Student Chapter of the Year resides on Monteagle Ridge. Niagara University's student chapter of the CMAA topped more than 50 other colleges and universities from throughout the country to receive the prestigious annual award at the association's National Conference in Orlando, Fla., on Feb. 25. Niagara's chapter also was presented with the Club of the Future Award during the event.

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, on Tuesday denounced a plan that would place a new tax on every firearm currently owned by New Yorkers and establish a levy on future firearm purchases. Ceretto called Senate bill S.2994 an egregious attack on the Second Amendment and demanded that lawmakers from both parties defeat the legislation.

The keynote speaker was renowned musician Sujeet Desai. The instrumentalist, who has performed around the world and with performers including Kenny G., spoke on how individuals with Down syndrome lead happy, productive and meaningful lives.

The Lewiston-Porter School District is facing a 4.2 percent increase in its 2011-12 budget that in normal times would not be a major problem. However with New York state calling for a reduction in state aid to Lew-Port of $2.3 million, the increase will have to be made up within the district. Lew-Port's proposed budget for 2011-12 is $41,779,619, up $1,684,961 from 2010-11.

The Barton Hill Hotel & Spa is still closed following a fire Monday afternoon at the 78-room Village of Lewiston inn. Owner Diane Finkbeiner said her business is "performing safety and maintenance checks in the best interests of ... staff and guests." She said her hope is that the Center Street hotel will reopen as soon as possible.
