This past holiday season, the Future Leaders Program at Niagara County Community College participated in a community service project to benefit Casey House. The youth shelter is a safe space in Niagara Falls for runaway, homeless or "at-risk" area youth.

Niagara University's College of Education, Levesque Institute for Civic Engagement, and Ostapenko Center for Race, Equality and Mission are co-sponsoring a summit titled "Mobilizing the Community to Transform the Lives of Children Living in Poverty." The free event will take place from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, in the Russell J. Salvatore Dining Commons on Niagara University's campus.
Disney to donate up to 1 million books to first book for seventh annual 'Magic of Storytelling' campaign

Disney|ABC Television and Disney Publishing Worldwide announced the seventh annual "Magic of Storytelling" campaign, which aims to donate up to 1 million books to First Book, a nonprofit that provides new free and affordable books to educators and organizations serving children from low-income families. Now through March 31, the campaign aims to inspire families' imaginations, cultivate a lifelong love of reading in kids, and bring books to underserved communities across the country.

Despite the struggles, Smith came through when it mattered most for the Falcons. The Falcons defeated the Kenmore East Bulldogs 71-69 Friday night, in what was a thriller from start to finish.

The Village of Lewiston Recreation Department is sponsoring a youth three-on-three basketball tournament starting at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at the Red Brick Municipal Building gym, North Fourth and Onondaga streets. The tournament will be double-elimination. The youth age groups are 11-13 and 13-16.

In September 2011, the University at Buffalo announced its largest-ever gift of $40 million, designated for the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. According to the terms of that gift, the donor's identity could be revealed only when he and his wife were deceased.
Starpoint Regan Intermediate School makes holidays bright for local families

Anyone would agree that no child should go without at the holidays. The children at Starpoint's Regan Intermediate School pitched in to make sure that didn't happen for some local residents. The teachers felt it was an important lesson for the students to learn that the holidays should be focused on giving rather than receiving.  The students and their families opened up their hearts and the wallets to make the holiday season special for many less fortunate families. 
Niagara-Wheatfield CSD offers free pre-K program

The Niagara-Wheatfield Central School District recently received word it was tentatively awarded a grant from the New York State Education Department for pre-kindergarten. The district will begin the program starting Jan. 22, 2019.

Friday night, the Niagara-Wheatfield hockey team faced off against their arch-rival Williamsville North, in a rematch of last season's Section VI large schools championship. A lot has changed since that title game, which the Falcons won, 2-0, but in the rematch at Northtown Center, the Spartans took advantage of a bad second period by N-W to get revenge, 5-3.

After starting off the season with a 76-12 win over North Tonawanda, the Niagara-Wheatfield wrestling team traveled to Webster for the Matthew Marino Invitational Wrestling Tournament. The team traveled looking to see how well they would place and ended up winning the whole tournament.
