After starting off the season with a 76-12 win over North Tonawanda, the Niagara-Wheatfield wrestling team traveled to Webster for the Matthew Marino Invitational Wrestling Tournament.
The team traveled looking to see how well they would place and ended up winning the whole tournament.
The Falcons put up 357.5 points in the two-day tournament, placing over 60 points ahead of runner up Webster-Schroeder.
Niagara-Wheatfield also had five wrestlers reach the finals of their weight class, including Collin Coughenour, Justin and Warren McDougald, Josh Thibeault and Kevin Halford.
Coughenour finished second in the 120-pound class after losing to 2018 state champion Anthony Noto in the finals; Justin McDougald defeated John Worthling in the 138-pound class to take home gold; Warren McDougald defeated Austin Lamb in the 152-pound class to take first place; Josh Thibeault took second in the 170-pound class after being defeated by 2018 state champ Ross McFarland; and Kevin Halford finished second in the 220-pound class.
The showing is a good start to the Falcons season, especially for the McDougald's who both placed high at the state tournament last season. Justin finished second, while Warren took third.
The team battled CSAT as the Tribune was sent to press. Catch the Falcons wrestling team in action starting at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Cheektowaga Duals at Cheektowaga High School.
