Family Promise of Western New York, an emergency shelter for families experiencing homelessness, has completed critical upgrades to its shelter facility and is reopening for intakes in August with double the capacity. This reopening is in anticipation of predicted mass evictions in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and unemployment throughout the region. Improvements include private family units, additional bathrooms and a fire safety system.

Paddles Up, an annual summer event at Beaver Island State Park, will have to wait until 2021 to celebrate its 15th year in the Niagara River. The event has been canceled due to the current COVID-19 restrictions and the concern for participants' health, announced Michelle Lockett, community engagement manager at Niagara River Greenway.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday announced New York state will send the COVID-19 medication Remdesivir to Florida as the state struggles with a resurgence of cases. Florida is waiting for a further supply from the federal government and New York will provide enough Remdesivir to help the state care for 280 COVID-19 patients until the federal shipment arrives. New York's shipment of the medication will arrive in Florida tomorrow.

On July 6, the Wheatfield Town Board held its first public meeting at the Town Hall since it was shuttered in March due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Town Hall reopened July 15 with a slew of new safety precautions. Rows of seats in the courtroom have been taped off to ensure social distancing, and board members are spaced widely apart.
