Youngstown Free Library sets electronic recycling event

The Youngstown Free Library continues its curbside services of books and materials for library cardholders in the face of the pandemic, while also planning for the months ahead.

“The Library remains at the ready to serve our community. While we will not be able to welcome you into the building until the Village Board (the Library’s landlord) votes to reopen the building, we are trying our best to serve you via phone, email, and social media during regular office hours,” the library stated on its website, youngstownfreelibrary.org.

One event in planning is the library’s annual “Green Day” free electronics recycling event, set to take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, in the parking lot of the Youngstown Red Brick Village Center, 240 Lockport St.

Claudia Andres, a library board member, said the recycling services are being provided by Maven Technologies. A number of electronics items are accepted, including computers, monitors, TVs, laptops, modems, servers, microwaves, cell phones, fax machines, copiers, CD players, IT equipment, peripherals – audio and visual equipment, telecommunications equipment and GPS units.

Items not accepted for drop-off include light bulbs or fixtures, any Freon-containing items such as refrigerators or AC units, household appliances or batteries.

“Your used electronics will be disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner,” Andres said.

She noted a donation of $5 per item is requested by the library.

“Please come out and support our wonderful library, while simultaneously getting rid of old electronics that are cluttering up your basements and garages. Thank you for your support!” Andres said.
