Americans spend an additional 20 minutes driving each week compared to 2014, according to new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Over the course of the year, Americans collectively spent 70 billion hours behind the wheel - an 8 percent increase since 2014. Each week, drivers travel more than 220 miles. Add it up and Americans drive an average of 11,498 miles each year - the equivalent of making two roundtrip drives from San Francisco to Washington, D.C.

On March 16, the Erie County Agricultural Society will conduct a "Maple Extravaganza Tour," providing a behind-the-scenes look at Western New York's vibrant maple syrup industry. Lewiston Town Board members and visitors to Monday's session at Town Hall had the opportunity to welcome the newest officers to the Lewiston Police Department. Chief Frank Previte officiated a swearing-in ceremony for new officers Mitchell Pegan, Adriano Medici and Lt. Michael Milbrand, who recently retired from the Tonawanda Police Department. All three joined the LPD on Feb. 18.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday toured the ice boom and ice-breaking operations on the Niagara River following the significant windstorm that impacted Western New York from Sunday into Monday. The tour was conducted on the New York Power Authority's William H. Latham ice breaker, which is used to prevent ice jams on the river and also to prevent ice from blocking the tunnel water intakes that are used by NYPA's power plant for power generation.

National Grid's Western New York field force of more than 1,500 workers has successfully restored power to 98 percent of the nearly 88,000 customers impacted by the damaging windstorm that pummeled the region on Sunday and Monday. The remaining 1,500 customers without service in the hardest hit neighborhoods of Buffalo, Niagara Falls and surrounding areas are expected to have power restored hour-by-hour as crews continue to work around the clock. The company's extensive resources will remain in the region until the last outage is repaired.
