The Niagara County Office for the Aging has begun distributing farmers market coupon booklets at sites throughout Niagara County. The Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program, provided by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, provides coupons to all who meet age and income requirements. Each booklet contains five coupons worth $4 each ($20 total), which can be used to buy fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables at participating farmers' markets throughout New York.

Registration is now open for the annual William Mattar "Pencils 4 Schools." Since the program's inception, William Mattar has donated nearly 2 million pencils to educators and students throughout the community. From July 14 through Aug. 13, New York state educators may submit their request to receive a pencil donation for their school district.

Property tax levy growth will be capped at 2% for 2022 for local governments that operate on a calendar-based fiscal year, State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced. This figure affects tax cap calculations for all counties, towns and fire districts, as well as 44 cities and 13 villages.

On Tuesday, a press conference was held to celebrate the return of the Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy to the Sanborn campus of Niagara County Community College. NCLEA will relocate to NCCC in August after a decade at Niagara University. Several elected officials joined college leaders to pledge their support of local law enforcement and the academy's move.

On Tuesday, Niagara University broke ground on its $11.5 million renovation project at the university's Kiernan Recreation Center. Project construction is scheduled to begin later this month, and the renovation is expected to be completed for the fall 2022 semester. Funding for the project includes a $1 million grant from the NYS Higher Education Capital Matching program (HECap), as well as other private donations and university investments.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced all New Yorkers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for July. The agency is also working with the federal government to ensure this aid, which has brought in more than $2.5 billion in food assistance to New Yorkers since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, will continue beyond July.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday signed legislation (S.3812/A.436) that repeals provisions of law prohibiting the practice of barbering on Sunday. Though rarely enforced, there had been a law on the books making it a misdemeanor to cut hair or provide a shave to another person on Sunday.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday signed legislation (S.3941/A.6040) expanding New York state's definition of telemarketing to include marketing by text message. New Yorkers have protection against unwanted robocalls under state law, but texting was not previously defined as telemarketing, exempting it from those protections. This legislation closes that loophole.

AAA Western and Central New York is reminding motorists to "Slow Down, Move Over" after a tragic incident in Cincinnati. The AAA family is deeply saddened by the death of one of our drivers over Independence Day weekend. 32-year-old Glenn Ewing was placing a AAA member's vehicle on the back of a tow truck when he was hit by a passing vehicle. Glenn's death underscores why "Slow Down, Move Over" laws are critical to safety and drivers must slow down, and move over into the next lane, if they can do so safely.
