As I closed out 2020 on New Year's Eve with my family (yes, I actually stayed awake past midnight!), I couldn't help but reflect on the year we just put behind us. I thought of how the events of 2020 affected my family and friends, as well as on a larger scope with the Chamber of Commerce and community.

The Board of Education met this past Monday for a lengthy work session. The board began with a briefing on policy updates and review. The BOE policy committee, led by board member Anne Orr, meets monthly to review and recommend new state and federal additions and amendments. In addition, the policy committee reviews each section of the manual annually, to keep the policy manual up-to-date and relevant.

We should not let the death of Jean Wholahan at age 106 on Jan. 7 go without remembering and appreciating her amazing, very long life on Grand Island. She has been an inspiration for me since the 1950s, when her husband, Allan, and I worked on the Citizens' Committee for the High School. It was Jean who encouraged me to join the League of Women Voters, which became a major part of my life.

On Wednesday, New York State Supreme Court Justice the Hon. Henry J. Nowak, J.S.C., granted a preliminary injunction against a New York State Department of Health order placing portions of Erie County into a micro-cluster action initiative "orange zone." He allowed the almost 100 applicants permission to operate under "yellow zone" restrictions "pursuant to the DOH's Interim COVID-19 Guidance."

The New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) on Wednesday called on the new Congress to pass a Coronavirus Stimulus Package that provides federal aid to state and local aid governments. NYSAC's call follows yesterday's announcement by incoming Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer and Sen. Although people must belong to an eligible priority group to be vaccinated, the state this week significantly expanded its list of those groups.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its 2019 Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) National Analysis, which shows that EPA and companies that manage chemicals continue to make progress in preventing pollution. The report shows continued toxic chemical reductions in Region 2 and that between 2018 and 2019 total releases of TRI chemicals nationwide decreased by 9%.
