Millions of people watched Monday night as Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Millions of dollars have also flowed into the children's toy drive Hamlin supports in his hometown of McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, as fans all over the country want to support the 24-year-old, who has been hospitalized since being carted off the field. In the days since the incident, more than $7 million in donations have been made to the toy drive.

The Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island thanks the hundreds of individuals and organizations who contributed to our successful 2022 holiday distribution. Seventy-six of your neighbor families were aided with gift cards and food, benefiting 137 adults and 140 children. Sixty-three of our seniors were also assisted in two senior apartment complexes.

It is with mixed emotions that I am announcing today that I will not seek a third term as supervisor for the Town of Niagara. I truly believe that everything and everyone has a shelf life, and it is time for me to "pass the baton" and spend more quality time with my family. I am very proud of our accomplishments over the past nine years, and I look forward to a new vision and new focus that the next town supervisor and board will have.

The Town of Porter opened 2023 with its reorganizational session Tuesday, where a number of resolutions and routine procedural items were approved, setting the stage for operations in the coming year. Included were appointments, the town's holiday and standard workday schedules, and the naming of officials to various positions/duties.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced New York state's annual commemoration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be presented as a statewide broadcast event, "New York State Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Paths to Change," airing on PBS stations throughout New York beginning Sunday, Jan. 15. The public may also attend a free screening of the tribute on Friday, Jan. 13, at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany; or watch the program beginning at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 16.

New this school year, the "Gallery Project" course allows students to design exhibitions and programming for Lew-Port's new Level Art Gallery. Students are currently preparing an exhibition about Artpark. Each student is researching a specific aspect of Artpark after learning about the park's history through reading, viewing an artist-created documentary, and participating in a guided tour of the park led by regional curator Albert Chao.

Mount St. Mary's Hospital (MSMH) welcomed the providers from UBMD Emergency Medicine to the emergency department on Jan. 1, along with the medical team from Buffalo-Niagara Hospitalists, who will manage inpatient care at the hospital. These two groups are also slated to facilitate both inpatient care and emergency care at the new Lockport Memorial Campus of Mount St. Mary's Hospital when it opens later in 2023.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the New York State Police issued 32,934 tickets and arrested 453 people for impaired driving during the national DWI crackdown, which started Wednesday, Dec. 14, and continued through New Year's Day Sunday. Troopers arrested 453 people for DWI, and investigated 4,417 accidents, which resulted in 528 people being injured and eight fatalities.

USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will send the hemp production and disposition inquiry to over 1,000 northeastern state producers on Jan. 19. This follows NASS' 2021 hemp acreage and production survey. Like the 2021 questionnaire, this year's survey will collect information on the total planted and harvested area, yield, production, and value of hemp in the U.S. in 2022.

The Greater Buffalo Niagara Regional Transportation Council (GBNRTC) has announced a public meeting for Region Central, which covers the area of Buffalo surrounding the Scajaquada Creek corridor, including Route 198.
