Niagara County Legislature Chairman Becky Wydysh on Friday announced she is approving the reopening of gyms and fitness centers, including indoor classes, in Niagara County on Monday, Aug. 24 - the earliest date allowed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He left the decision on gym reopenings to local county officials.

Following three years of intensive writing and editing, Jim Overfield and his collaborative writing team are weeks away from publishing an updated and expanded version of his father's book, "The 100 Seasons of Buffalo Baseball," originally printed by Joseph M. Overfield in 1985. This new version is titled "The Seasons of Buffalo Baseball 1857-2020."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday announced a new record-high number of COVID-19 test results - 98,880 - were reported to New York state on Thursday. The governor also announced hospitalizations dropped below 500 for the first time, to 490, the lowest number since March 16. The number of ICU patients dropped to 119, the lowest number since March 15. The rate of positive tests - 0.72% - was below 1% for the 14th straight day.

At a virtual event Thursday, the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) kicked off its Labor Day impaired driving high-visibility enforcement campaign, reminding Americans not to drive impaired. This year's high-visibility enforcement will be supported by a $10 million national advertising campaign. Motorists can expect to see increased law enforcement on the road through Sept. 7.

When "Play ball!" was heard in Buffalo's downtown gem of a ballpark, Sahlen Field, at 6:37 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, I experienced tears of joy. The game's first pitch signified the return of Major League Baseball to Buffalo. The Queen City was a member of the Federal League in 1905.

The City of Niagara Falls and Modern Disposal have developed a plan for the removal of excess waste (blue) and recycling (green) carts. For Niagara Falls residents who have extra waste and recycling carts for which a service change request has been filed and approved, Modern Disposal will be picking up these carts for removal starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced the groundbreaking of a new project to improve flood resiliency at Irondequoit Bay State Marine Park in Monroe County. The $2.67 million project, which is part of the governor's Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative, will repair damage from flooding in 2017 and 2019, and raise the boat launch, docks and parking lot so they can continue to operate during times of high water.

On Tuesday, the North Tonawanda Common Council voted 3-1 to appoint current 2nd Ward Alderman Donna Braun as city clerk/treasurer. The position was vacated when then-city clerk/treasurer Matthew Parrish resigned on Aug. 9. Assistant City Clerk Lori Swartz has filled the position in the interim.

Speaking to reporters on a conference call Wednesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said New York is in "the second half of the game" - hopefully - with regard to fighting the coronavirus. He said local health departments need to prepare for flu season while not detracting from COVID-19 testing and tracing. Moreover, he said schools need to have a plan to mitigate a possible spread of the virus once campus doors reopen.
