Higgins: Nearly $92 million delivered to WNY families through Child Tax Credit in August

Congressman Brian Higgins shared a new report issued by the Joint Economic Committee indicating approximately 228,000 advance Child Tax Credit payments were distributed in Western New York's three congressional districts delivering an estimated $91.9 million to local families in the month of August.

On the closing night of the 63rd annual Niagara County Peach Festival, the Lewiston Kiwanis Club presented a check in the amount of $4,000 to the John R. Oishei Children's Hospital. The organization, on Sunday, also presented a check for $883.80 to Lewiston No. 1 Fire Co. This money will be used to purchase an additional automated external defibrillator for response vehicles.

Peach Festival: Shanya Davis named Peach Queen

Sunday night at the Lewiston No. 1 Fire Co. firehall, 19-year-old Shanya Davis of Niagara Falls was named the 2021-22 Peach Queen. She received her crown from Victoria Skrlin-Kozak, who took the title in 2019. The scholarship pageant did not take place in 2020, due to coronavirus safety restrictions.
Women of the Word starting up again

Helipad at Mount St. Mary's Hospital to complement growing stroke program

"Time is brain" is a statement often used to describe how minutes matter for patients who suffer a stroke. Mount St. Mary's Hospital is moving forward with plans to install a helipad on its campus at 5300 Military Road in Lewiston, which will provide emergency air transport for patients who may require a higher level of care. Currently, emergency ground transport time to Buffalo is 45 minutes; air transport would cut the time to 8 minutes.

On Sept. 18-19, the American Revolution returns to Western New York in a big way. Three of the largest 18th century reenactment organizations in North America will converge on Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown for a weekend of large-scale battle reenactments, living history camps and other educational activities. The theme of the event will be "Raid and Retribution" focusing on the Revolution on the New York frontier.

NCSO utilizing new tech

Sheriff Michael Filicetti announced the implementation of a new tool to assist the Niagara County Sheriff's Office in handling mental health calls. In partnership with Niagara County Mental Health, and through the benefit of a grant received by the New York State Office of Mental Health, the NCSO will be deploying iPads to deputies. The tech will be utilized to connect persons in crisis directly with mental health clinicians.

Fisher has placed four retired priests on administrative leave after being informed that informational documents have been filed with the federal Bankruptcy Court as part of the Buffalo Catholic Diocese's Chapter 11 reorganization proceeding. Specifically, bankruptcy claimants have filed confidential documents containing information about their allegations against the priests.
DiNapoli: Unemployment taxes on employers poised to increase to repay $9B owed to federal government

The historic surge in unemployment claims at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic rapidly depleted the New York State Unemployment Insurance (UI) Trust Fund, resulting in the state borrowing from the federal government to pay claims. State UI tax rates have already risen to the highest level permissible under law in 2021. Unless the state or federal government takes significant action, federal UI tax rates on employers will also increase in 2022 and beyond, according to a report issued by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.
