Tops Friendly Markets, along with vendor partners GOYA, La Preferida, NY Produce, Romero Foods, La Banderita, Ole Mexican Foods and River Valley, is supporting National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 to Oct. 15) and local organizations such as the Hispanic Heritage Council of Western New York.
“At Tops, we are proud to honor the lives and achievements of Hispanic Americans throughout our history, especially during National Hispanic Heritage Month,” said Kathy Sautter, public and media relations manager for Tops Friendly Markets. “Together, with the support of our vendor partners, we are proud to be able to give back to our community by making donations to several local not-for-profit organizations throughout our footprint, equating to well over $6,000 that truly serve our Hispanic communities each and every day. Today and always, we honor the heritage, diversity and integrity that is embodied by Hispanic Heritage Month.”
A check presentation and product donation will be made to the Hispanic Heritage Council at the conclusion of Hispanic Heritage Month.
A press release from Tops stated, “The Hispanic Heritage Council of Western New York Inc. is a nonprofit organization that exists to promote and inspire awareness, understanding and appreciation of the past, present and future contribution of the Hispanic community in Western New York. Hispanics have been part of the fabric of the WNY community since the late 1800s and the early 1900s. The earliest arrivals were people for all parts of Central and South America, Mexico, Spain, and the Caribbean, who came here humbly looking for the American dream. Some did not have much education, but they had hearts determined to explore a new frontier and to work hard to improve the lives of their families here and their loved one’s back home.
“They arrived, like many other immigrants, as non-English speakers with the hope to someday become citizens and contributors to this great area. They worked as migrants in fields, factories, rail yards, steel plants and many places that would offer meaningful employment and the opportunity for success.
“In today’s 21st century, Hispanics in WNY contribute professionally in the private and public sector continuing the tradition of their ancestors in the fields of military, education, medicine, law, government, communications, business, finance, sports, arts and music.”
