NYS DOL Commissioner Roberta Reardon announces decision regarding farm worker overtime

New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) Commissioner Roberta Reardon on Friday issued an order accepting the recommendation of the Farm Laborers Wage Board to lower the current 60-hour threshold for overtime pay to 40 hours per week by Jan. 1, 2032, allowing 10 years to phase in the new threshold.

The New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) announced next steps in the state's $15 minimum hourly wage phase-in. Commissioner Roberta Reardon issued an order calling for the minimum wage rate in counties outside of New York City, Long Island and Westchester to rise by $1 per hour, from $13.20 to $14.20, following a statutorily required economic analysis conducted by the New York State Division of the Budget (DOB).

Empire State Development and the New York Power Authority announced transparent ceramic manufacturer Surmet Corp. has expanded its 75,000-square-foot facility at 699 Hertel Ave., Buffalo, by more than 4,000 square-feet to house new ceramics processing equipment. The company also invested in new production furnaces and renovations to the existing facility.

Children enjoyed pony rides, as well as opportunities to feed llamas and other animals, as well as to view turtles, snapping dragons and assorted creatures. Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday announced construction is underway on a $21 million renovation project at Kleinhans Music Hall, a world-class arts and culture destination located in Buffalo. The project will upgrade and refurbish the National Historic Landmark and prevent further deterioration. Hochul recently announced $8 million in fiscal year 2023 budget funding for the project, in addition to up to $1 million in grants from Empire State Development.

Tourism economy is thriving in Niagara County, reaching $831 million in 2021

In August, New York state released a tourism economics research study for 2021, detailing the economic impact of tourism across the state. The study revealed the total traveler spend in Niagara County in 2021 reached $831 million, which is an increase of 9.3% relative to 2019. Traveler spend was heavily impacted in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but tourism spending surpassed prepandemic levels in 2021.

Empire State Development announced Linde, a global industrial gases and engineering company, is expanding the scope of its North American PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolyzer project in Niagara Falls, which will now include a 35 MW electrolyzer plant.
