Enacted NYS 2024-25 budget makes critical investment in local journalism

Speaker Carl Heastie and Assembly member Carrie Woerner today announced the enacted state fiscal year (SFY) 2024-25 budget provides a much-needed investment in local journalism by providing $30 million in tax credits each year, over three years, to support the salaries of local journalists.

Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature unveiled the final state budget, including a payroll tax credit for local news outlets, modeled on the Local Journalism Sustainability Act, in the sweeping package. With the passage of this bill, New York is now the first state in the nation to incentivize hiring and retaining local journalists.

New York State Sen. Sean Ryan and Assembly member Karen McMahon announced the fiscal year 2024-25 state budget will include $250 million to establish Empire AI, a state-owned research and computing facility at the University at Buffalo that will expand the use of artificial intelligence across New York. In addition to the $250 million state investment, SUNY will contribute $25 million to the program over a 10-year period.
