Now in its ninth year, the annual Run Jimmy Run Charity 5K has raised close to $100,000 for the Alzheimer's Association Western New York chapter. The family-friendly 5K race and 1K "fun walk" was launched by Maureen Griffin Tomczak in memory of her father, Buffalo Mayor James "Jimmy" Griffin, who died from a type of dementia in 2008.

At the Grand Island Central School District Board of Education meeting on that date, Dr. Rubie Harris, assistant superintendent of budget and finance, said, "We're confident that the aid that was allocated in the January funds is what we will receive. We'll be blessed if we receive more than that. We don't expect it to be less."
