DEC releases draft Great Lakes action agenda to help restore, protect & revitalize NYS region

Flu shot clinic to be held at Golden Age Center

The Grand Island Golden Age Center, at 3278 Whitehaven Road, will host a flu shot clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11. The clinic is "a community event that's open to the public right here on Grand Island," explained Jen Menter, recreation supervisor of the center. The flu shots will be administered by Walgreen's employees.

New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) Commissioner Roberta Reardon on Friday issued an order accepting the recommendation of the Farm Laborers Wage Board to lower the current 60-hour threshold for overtime pay to 40 hours per week by Jan. 1, 2032, allowing 10 years to phase in the new threshold.

The New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) announced next steps in the state's $15 minimum hourly wage phase-in. Commissioner Roberta Reardon issued an order calling for the minimum wage rate in counties outside of New York City, Long Island and Westchester to rise by $1 per hour, from $13.20 to $14.20, following a statutorily required economic analysis conducted by the New York State Division of the Budget (DOB).

DEC: Invasive aquatic plant hydrilla found in Niagara River

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced hydrilla, an invasive aquatic plant, was found at two additional locations along the eastern shore of the Niagara River. The aquatic invasive was found and treated at a marina in North Tonawanda last year. This past summer, a hydrilla plant found by a boat steward during a routine inspection prompted another round of surveys along the Niagara River.
$150 million in funding opportunities for arts & culture organizations

Congressman Brian Higgins, along with Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino, announced the cities of Buffalo and Niagara Falls have been awarded close to $300,000 in federal funding combined to be used toward public safety and crime prevention measures. Congressman Brian Higgins announced two federal grants totaling $1,979,097 awarded to Endeavor Health Services and the Community Health Center of Buffalo (CHCB). His team said, "Funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and awarded through the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics program, grants will expand access to mental health and substance use services in Western New York's underserved communities."
