The Child Advocacy Center of Niagara, a service of Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, and the Niagara County Family Violence Intervention Project, will host the 22nd annual “Safe at Home” conference for the first time since 2019.

Scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Niagara Riverside Resort (7001 Buffalo Ave., Niagara Falls), the conference is intended for professionals in the fields of child welfare, victim advocacy, criminal justice, mental health and education. It will feature national and local experts on the topics of family violence, abuse and trauma.

“October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and we are pleased to provide this opportunity for professionals from across WNY to come together to expand their knowledge related to interpersonal violence and trauma, as well as gain practical skills to assist those impacted by abuse across the lifespan,” said Shelley Hitzel, executive director of The Child Advocacy Center of Niagara.

This year’s keynote speaker is Danielle Slakoff, Ph.D., an assistant professor of criminal justice at California State University, and a national expert on violence against women. Slakoff will discuss media representations of women and girl victims across race, and how these portrayals impact the general public as well as the criminal justice system.

Plenary speaker ArDenay Garner, LMSW, CPC, is a survivor, bestselling author, and personal development coach committed to promoting compassion and world healing through storytelling and healing conversations. Garner will share her story and insights on supporting victims of intimate partner violence.

“Safe at Home: Seeking Solutions for Adults and Children Experiencing Family Violence” is sponsored by the Niagara County Family Violence Project, the Child Advocacy Center of Niagara, Niagara County Department of Social Services and New York State Office of Child and Family Services. Cost to attend is $30 per person. Scholarship opportunities are available to local college students and interns.
