The Department of Homeland Security requires county emergency management plans to demonstrate animal management capabilities in disasters. Specific capabilities include emergency animal sheltering, and animal identification and tracking mechanisms to minimize the time and economic resources expended in the animal-owner reunification process in disasters.

The facility siting board and Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens extended the public comment period by 45 days for Chemical Waste Management's application to construct and operate a new landfill at the company's existing facility in the towns of Porter and Lewiston due to extensive public interest and requests for additional time to comment on the permit application.

Peach Queen contestants met for the first time this week in preparation for the Niagara County/Lewiston Kiwanis Peach Festival, to be held Sept. 5-7 at Academy Park in Lewiston. Contestants will attend events and complete community service projects in the next month leading up to the on-stage portion of the program.

Joseph Pillittere Jr. will honor his late mother Monday by giving away 500 Silo Restaurant hot dogs. Food will be served from 11 a.m. until the dogs are gone.
Patrons enjoying a free hot dog are encouraged to make a donation to Hospice House.
"Mr. Pillittere has purchased 500 hot dogs. We are working together to hold this great hot dog giveaway to honor his mom," Silo proprietor Alan Hastings said. "We start giving them away until supplies are gone.
"Among other things, those who do make a donation to Hospice House will also be eligible to win one of our 'Sand Dock Sundaes.' We will be making the draw Monday night."
