The Community Picnic sponsored by the Village of Youngstown has created fond memories for residents over the past 10 years.

Locals, both young and old, come together to enjoy the annual event at Falkner Park.

To improve upon this already historically successful event, the village has added two new events to make Saturday, Aug. 9, full of fun.

Youngstown Heritage Tours and Tourism will dedicate a large graphic kiosk heritage map at 1 p.m.

Looking for a little luck?

Maybe the 4,500 ladybugs that children plan to release at 2:30 p.m. will provide just that. An educational unit also will inform visitors of the many benefits ladybugs give to the ecosystem.

Crafts will be found, courtesy of the 1812 Bicentennial Peace Garden Committee, which makes all of this possible.

Clear your schedule earlier in the day to enjoy the children's fishing derby sponsored by the Niagara River Anglers Association, beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until noon on the south dock.

There will be a surplus of food readily available in the afternoon. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided by the Village of Youngstown and grilled by the Youngstown Lions Club. Youngstown Baptist Church is coordinating the food service. Families are asked to bring a dish to share.

Local restaurants are offering specialty dishes such as Oriental salad courtesy of The Village Diner, pizza courtesy of Main Street Gas and Grille, and mac and cheese courtesy of Bandana's.

Opening ceremonies will begin at noon, with the Boy Scouts presenting colors, Step In Time singing the national anthem, Youngstown Mayor Raleigh Reynolds welcoming the community, and the Rev. Rex Stewart from Youngstown First Presbyterian offering a prayer.

Musical entertainment will be provided by APDJs.

Local organizations will on be site with displays, personnel and tables offering visitors information on events and more. Expected groups include the Youngstown Free Library, Old Fort Niagara, Coast Guard Station Niagara, Youngstown Heritage Tours and Tourism, the Town of Porter Historical Society, Wild Kritters, the SPCA Puppy Kissing Booth and Niagara Jet Adventures.

Numerous activities will surely offer entertainment for everyone. You can look forward to enjoying a bounce house, the wading pool, the Shanandoah Acres Petting Zoo, a watermelon-eating contest, face-painting, an egg toss, a water-balloon toss, wheelbarrow race, potato-sack race, fire truck rides by Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co., an ice cream sundae station, a children's craft corner, a visit from Donuts the Clown and the sidewalk chalk contest.

Come experience all of the great things Youngstown has to offer: from wonderful people to prosperous businesses and delightful entertainment, surrounded by the wonderful Niagara River and Lake Ontario.
