Michael P. Barrett, born in Niagara Falls and raised in Youngstown, holds the prestigious title of 17th sergeant major in the United States Marine Corps.

He enlisted in March 1981 and has earned many honorable awards for his accomplishments, including two bronze stars.

Barrett is an infantry instructor, but has performed other duties as an armorer, nuclear biological chemical noncommissioned officer and training chief.

He also has a very impressive service record.

He has been involved in more than 200 combat operations and completed two deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.

He has risked his life numerous times. Barrett's family and community members admire his bravery and patriotism.

And so does the community.

In July, the Village of Youngstown and Town of Porter honored Barrett by recognizing a section of Church Street adjacent to Veterans Park as Michael P. Barrett Way.
