Relay For Life goes on, undeterred by weather

The soaking rainfall, the blustery winds, and even a tornado warning on July 17 changed Relay For Life, but the event went on as scheduled. The changes included the cancellation of the car show and the fire performance. Survivors were still offered free meals, the basket raffle attracted a crowd, the wheel of chance still spun, and people purchased tickets for the 50-50 raffle.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday signed legislation (S.3086/A.3891) raising the age of consent to be married in New York state to 18. This new measure builds upon legislation ending child marriage, which the governor signed in 2017 by removing the ability for 17-year-olds to be married with parental and judicial consent.
Ten Lives Club awarded $10,000 grant from East Hill Foundation to save more cats

Ten Lives Club has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the East Hill Foundation to help save more cats in Western New York. The grant is part of the Save the Cats Project and will allow the rescue to purchase a new feline serenity suite, a flat-top surgery table and an autoclave.

On Thursday, New York State Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt and Assembly members Angelo Morinello and Mike Norris sent a letter requesting immediate coordination between the New York State Office of Emergency Management (SEMO), the cities of Lockport and Niagara Falls, and Niagara County, regarding flash flooding that occurred July 20. Severe rainstorms caused a significant amount of damage throughout those areas.

Andrew Cuomo on Thursday signed legislation (S.4483/A.4672) he said will allow New Yorkers a new, less-expensive way to obtain insurance protection for their cell phones through their credit card, debit card or checking account. Prior to the passage of the legislation, state law did not allow credit or debit card issuers and banks to insure their customers' wireless communication devices from damage, loss or theft.
