Empower, a Niagara County-based not-for-profit service provider, is offering document shredding services at its Empties for Empower location, 4701 Military Road. The service is provided by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, who are paid for their work.

In October 2017, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced that North Tonawanda was a recipient of $2.5 million as part of the $20 million Smart Growth Community Fund Buffalo Billion II initiative.  North Tonawanda, as well as the other municipalities that received $2.5 million each - the City of Dunkirk, City of Lackawanna and Village of Gowanda - are focusing on projects that utilize existing infrastructure to support placemaking, walkable communities and sustainable development.  Funding awards were recommended and approved by the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council (WNYREDC).
Local Scout builds compost bin for Eagle Scout project

Sam Fuster recently built a compost bin at Stella Niagara Education Park as the final project in his efforts to become an Eagle Scout. The compost bin will be used by the school as part of their Integrated Outdoor Education.
EPA finalizes nearly $7M plan to cleanup soil at residential properties at Eighteen Mile Creek Superfund Site in Lockport

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has finalized its plan to cleanup lead-contaminated soil at approximately 28 residences that are impacted by the former Flintkote Plant property at the Eighteen Mile Creek Superfund Site in Lockport. As part of a multiphased, comprehensive cleanup of the Eighteen Mile Creek Site, EPA will remove and transport approximately 14,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil for off-site disposal at facilities licensed to handle the waste. The excavated areas will be restored with clean soil.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation advised homeowners that heating fuel oil storage tanks should be inspected to ensure they will not leak or spill before receiving the first shipment of fuel oil for the upcoming heating season.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Family & Children's Service of Niagara coordinated the fifth annual Domestic Violence Ribbon Walk on Tuesday. Staff, local elected leaders and community members gathered on Third Street to take a collective stand against domestic violence. As they walked, they tied purple ribbons on the trees between Main and Niagara streets.

The New York Power Authority board of trustees approved power contract extensions that combine to support more than 88,000 jobs throughout the state. The contract extensions also further align the Power Authority's economic development programs with Gov. Andrew Cuomo's state energy plan, which calls for 50 percent of New York's electricity is to be generated by renewable energy sources by 2030.
