NCCC announces finalists for presidential search

The Niagara County Community College board of trustees on Friday announced its presidential search committee identified four finalists for the college presidency and will hold open public forums for each candidate next week.

Though Casey LaFlair is from Pittsburgh and has no family ties to this area, she volunteered at the first "Rockout Cancer" event in 2018. LaFlair worked alongside the Lower Niagara Community Survivors group in raising funds for others - for people she didn't know and had never met, who were battling the disease and in need of assistance.

In 1939, the Niagara Frontier Boat Racing Association was founded by a few young men, "boat bugs," who'd been informally racing along the Niagara River for years. 'Zac gives back'

Zac Campas of North Tonawanda was provided life-saving treatment by the Oishei Children's Hospital of Buffalo when he was an infant. Zac has since grown into an active member of the North Tonawanda community. He mows lawns around his neighborhood to earn extra money, works part-time as a cleaner at the Gentleman's Club Barber shop and is a regular with of North Tonawanda Neighborhood Watch group.

That being said, some give a few dollars to the Salvation Army or visit a family member who's down with a cold. Meals on Wheels of Niagara Falls started in 1970. It was the very first local meal provider in Niagara Falls. It is a private nonprofit, meaning that it doesn't accept funding from the government, but subsists on client payments and private donations that generous individuals will often supply. The organization has been doing this for a very long time, and now they need help.

When water supplies exceed capacity in the Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River system, water levels rise. When this happens, regulation is looked to as the solution. But during periods of extreme water supply, the ability of regulated outflows to influence Lake Ontario levels is greatly diminished. In practical terms, no regulation plan can eliminate high water events on Lake Ontario or the St. Lawrence River.

The New York State Public Service Commission announced the price of electricity this winter is expected to be slightly lower than last winter on average. Likewise, for natural gas, based on lower prices and a normal weather forecast, the average customer's bill is expected to be lower than last year.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the agency is seeking angler feedback on proposed fishing regulation changes for New York's Great Lakes. The proposed changes are designed to safeguard and expand certain fish populations while enhancing anglers' continued enjoyment of these world-class fisheries. The majority of the proposals are a direct result of DEC's work with anglers during the past several years to identify desired outcomes for Lake Ontario sport fishery management.
