Artpark introduces 'Fairy House Festival'

Artpark has planted the seeds for a new family festival. The "Fairy House Festival" will be held from noon until 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 5. This unique, outdoor, family-friendly festival features an afternoon in scenic Artpark and is filled with creative art activities, storytelling, games, a "Magical Maze" to wander through, a book signing by children's book author Tracy Kane, and a "Fairy House" tour throughout the woods and gardens of the park.

Mayor Robert G. Ortt has announced the City of North Tonawanda will dedicate a park bench in honor and memory of LCPL Timothy G. Serwinowski, a U.S. Marine and North Tonawanda native, who was killed in action on June 21, 2010, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The dedication will be held on Saturday, May 28, at 11 a.m. in Veteran's Park on River Road.

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, today helped pass legislation that will encourage tourism and help create local jobs in the Niagara Falls region. The bill establishes the temporary New York State War of 1812 200th Anniversary Commemoration Commission, which will plan and execute a number of War of 1812 re-enactments and other tourism events.

The U.S. Coast Guard Accident Statistics has identified New York state with one of the highest number of accidents and fatalities in 2009. Although National Safe Boating Week, held on Memorial Day weekend, is the traditional start of the recreational boating season, spring-breakers and eager boaters often take to the water early. The U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Division, 3-9 Eastern Region, which serves the Western New York area, encourages all boaters to always wear a life jacket each and every time they are on the water.
Old Fort Niagara hosts Memorial Day weekend tribute

Old Fort Niagara is one of longest occupied military bases in North America and, on Memorial Day weekend, the historic site plans a dramatic exhibition of four centuries of military history. In addition to the fort's usual array of red-coated, musket bearing soldiers, visitors will see WWII jeeps and GI's, WWI doughboys, as well as troops from the War of 1812, Civil War, and Spanish American conflicts.

Lewiston 1-for-2 with Greenway approvals

The Niagara River Greenway Commission on Tuesday approved one of two projects submitted by the Town of Lewiston. Commissioners said the renovation of Toohey Park in the Village of Lewiston is consistent with the Greenway Plan. They didn't feel the same way about the Colonial Village Park restoration project, however, and did not endorse the proposal.
