Old Fort Niagara named Arthur and Judith Hannah of Youngstown as the historic site's volunteers of the year at OFN's recent volunteer recognition breakfast. Art and Judy have contributed thousands of hours to the fort's educational programs, including costumed interpretation, foodways programs and planning and cultivation of the fort's historic gardens.

Artpark & Company Inc. announces auditions for its upcoming Mainstage production "Sound of Music," which will start rehearsals June 24 and run until July 19. To those who say you can't come home again, Niagara University's new softball coach, Ellie Chan, would disagree. The Western New York native and Canisius College grad (we won't hold that against her), has been working her way up the coaching ranks since the day she left college. All that time and hard work has paid off with her returning home for her first Division 1 coaching job.

The Niagara University's men's basketball team, despite its recent loss to Loyola, leads the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) thanks to a recent seven-game winning streak.
"I would be lying if I said I expected that; I knew we could win every game, but I also knew we could lose every game and that's why I think we're doing well," Niagara University's head coach Joe Milhalich said of the seven wins in a row.

This past weekend, the Purple Eagles men's hockey team improved to 17-4-5. The team's 16th Atlantic Hockey Association win set a new program record for conference wins in a season. The previous record was set by the 1999-00 team with a record of 15-0-2.

There are events that are hosted by the CPB or Campus Programming Board. The events are designed to get students active on the NU campus and to get to know each other with fun-filled activities.

The Grand Island Lions Club has been serving the community for more than 50 years, and though most people are familiar with our eyeglass collections, our Special Kids Picnic, our annual spaghetti dinner, and our involvement with the Miracle League Field, most are not aware of all the behind-the-scenes activities we perform and the services available through our work and our association with sight, hearing, health, and environmentally-related professionals and organizations.
Take, for example, the trip a used pair of eyeglasses takes from your face to the face of someone, somewhere in the world, who needs them but, unfortunately, can't afford them. How can we do that for just 8 cents a pair?

From Feb. 22 through 24, the Niagara University Players will present an entirely student-run production of "Time Stands Still" by Donald Margulies in the Leary Theatre within the Elizabeth Ann Clune Center for Theatre, Clet Hall.
Directed by NU Theater Junior Nathan Andrew Miller, "Time Stands Still" is a funny, passionate, thought-provoking and heartbreaking piece of work. It is a look at war through the lens of a young couple brought together by the conflict in Iraq only to have their relationship challenged by it (the show contains adult subject matter).

Grand Island is putting out the "Open for Business" sign and taking a proactive approach to business development.
Members of the town's Economic Development Advisory Board are ramping up efforts to promote the town as business-friendly. EDAB Co-chair Tom Knight said the group's goal is to recruit new business to the Island "that are a fit and makes sense, without stepping on the toes of existing businesses."
