Football and chili go together like Interact and Rotary.
The latter two joined together Tuesday at Grand Island High School to make chili in advance of the Super Bowl. Sale of the chili by Grand Island Rotarians will support the GIHS Interact Club and its ongoing programs.
Rotarian Angelo Grande, Interact adviser and a self-described cooking expert from hours spent watching The Food Network, said money raised by the chili sale will sponsor the Interact Leadership Program.
"I'd like to send some of these kids to leadership conferences," Grande said. Sixteen students were on hand Tuesday to make chili. Orders can be placed with Rotarians, and what is unsold will be available Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the high school, Grande said.
"I think I'll be having some chili during the Super Bowl," said Orendael Miller, Interact co-president.
"I made the chili last year, and it was a lot of fun last year, too," Miller said. They made more than 100 quarts Tuesday.
"It's a lot of fun here because you get to do it with all of your friends. You're just kind of working and talking and laughing and having fun. And it's not really a chore when you do that. Unless you're cutting onions," she said.
