Gov. Kathy Hochul announced all New Yorkers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for May. All households participating in SNAP - including those already at the maximum level of benefits - will receive a supplemental allotment this month, resulting in a roughly $234 million infusion of federal funding into the New York state economy.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced $2 million in federal funding for Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park in Buffalo. The grant will support the development of a "play garden," including eight play areas, park furnishings, landscaping and restrooms in space formerly known as LaSalle Park, which is undergoing a major transformation.

Park Police have identified a missing kayaker as 54-year-old Paul Hahn of Amherst. It is believed that Hahn launched his kayak at Golden Hill State Park between Friday, April 22, and Monday, April 25l went out onto Lake Ontario, and has not been seen since.

The Buffalo City Mission's board of directors announced a leadership transition, naming Aubrey Calhoun as the incoming executive director. Calhoun will be the first female executive director and CEO in the Buffalo City Mission's 105-year history, succeeding active Executive Director and CEO Stuart Harper, who will step down May 6.

It might be almost May, but it is still snowing in Buffalo. To help Western New Yorkers with the cost of heating bills, Congressman Brian Higgins announced $36 million in additional federal funding to New York state for the Home Energy Assistance Program. This latest award brings the total funding provided to New Yorkers for HEAP to over $918 million, the largest state allocation in the nation.

The continuing battle against sea lampreys soon will come to locations in the local area. A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service assessment crew will conduct work in the Niagara River (Erie and Niagara counties) May 10-19 to estimate the abundance of sea lampreys. The information gathered will be used to determine the need for sea lamprey control.
