The Tool Library announces spring 2022 service days

Volunteer opportunities includes partnership with Resource Council of WNY

The Tool Library announced it will be putting its tools and volunteers to work with a new calendar of community service events, on April 23 and 30 and May 7, 14, 21 and 28. Organizers said, “Each of the six service events provide an opportunity to beautify, strengthen and contribute to the WNY community through direct, hands-on action.”

This spring’s schedule includes park and trail cleanups, planting in community gardens across Buffalo’s University Heights and Kensington-Bailey neighborhoods, and tree stewardship for newly planted trees along William Gaiter Parkway and in Dewey Park. In addition to focusing on neighborhood improvement activities, The Tool Library’s service events also provide an opportunity for volunteers to learn new skills, such as pruning, gardening and tree planting.

For its last service day on Saturday, May 28, The Tool Library will partner with the Resource Council of WNY on their Perkins Park Cleanup. The Resource Council is the inaugural winner of The Tool Library’s “Nominate a Project” process. Neighbors and community organizations had the opportunity to nominate a project to receive technical support and tools from the team at The Tool Library this spring.

“Our Service Days are about so much more than just picking up trash or planting a tree” said Darren Cotton, board president of The Tool Library. “They’re about reconnecting neighbors, harnessing the power of collective action to address quality of life issues, and building a culture of stewardship over the spaces we share.”

As part of this spring’s rollout, The Tool Library board is also launching a new fundraising drive to grow its number of monthly donors who help support these service events and provide tools for projects across WNY. A press release said, “Help celebrate 50,000 tools borrowed by reaching the goal of 50 sustaining donors this summer!”

To date, Tool Library volunteers and partners have helped plant more than 1,500 trees and over 10,000 tulip and daffodil bulbs across the City of Buffalo.

The Tool Library is a volunteer-powered, community-based tool lending nonprofit started in 2011 in Buffalo’s University Heights neighborhood. Its mission is to provide communities with the tools they need to create the change they want.
