New York State Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt and Assemblyman Mike Norris on Monday penned a letter to the New York State Department of Transportation calling for a traffic safety study of South Transit Street in the City of Lockport.

“For a second time in as many months, we have seen yet another devastating incident involving motorists and a pedestrian crossing South Transit Street,” Ortt said. “Because of these tragedies, I am joining with local and state elected officials to call on our state’s Department of Transportation to conduct a traffic safety study of South Transit Street, and I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure the safety of drivers, pedestrians and all residents in our community.”

“I am pleased to join Sen. Ortt in calling for a New York State Department of Transportation traffic safety study on South Transit Street in response to recent tragic incidents,” Norris said. “A primary function of this agency is determining and assessing traffic safety, and road safety in a residential community with families and children is absolutely paramount.”

Ortt’s team said, “This unified call from Lockport state elected officials comes days after a second fatality occurred involving a pedestrian crossing South Transit Street. The letter was sent yesterday to the New York State Department of Transportation officially requesting a traffic safety study to be completed around the areas of these prior incidents on South Transit Street.”
