Starpoint Regan Intermediate School makes holidays bright for local families

Anyone would agree that no child should go without at the holidays. The children at Starpoint's Regan Intermediate School pitched in to make sure that didn't happen for some local residents. The teachers felt it was an important lesson for the students to learn that the holidays should be focused on giving rather than receiving.  The students and their families opened up their hearts and the wallets to make the holiday season special for many less fortunate families. 
Niagara-Wheatfield CSD offers free pre-K program

The Niagara-Wheatfield Central School District recently received word it was tentatively awarded a grant from the New York State Education Department for pre-kindergarten. The district will begin the program starting Jan. 22, 2019.

2018 was an interesting year. Residents in the Town of Wheatfield, Town of Niagara and City of North Tonawanda all saw their municipality change in some type of way, but now that 2018 is soon turning into 2019, it's time to start fresh.

Wheatfield board offers updates on LED switch

For months now, the Town of Wheatfield Town Board has discussed switching the town's light standards to LED. The effort, which has been spearheaded by Wheatfield Supervisor Don MacSwan and Councilman Curt Doktor took a step in a positive direction Monday night.

Last week, Sen. Rob Ortt (R,C,I,Ref-North Tonawanda) joined the Olcott Fire Co. to celebrate the purchasing of new rescue equipment, which was made possible by $15,000 in public protection funds secured earlier this year by the senator.
Starpoint sophomore receives 4th-degree black belt

Brendon Lauer, a 10th-grade student from Starpoint, has attained the rank of fourth-degree black belt in tae kwon-do at Jong Park Institute on Erie Avenue, North Tonawanda, after passing his testing on Saturday, Dec. 15.

NCCC surgical technology program receives continuing accreditation

The Division of Nursing and Allied Health at Niagara County Community College recently announced that the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs awarded continuing accreditation for 10 years to the Surgical Technology program, with an approved satellite campus at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.

Niagara-Wheatfield hockey comeback falls short

Friday night, the Niagara-Wheatfield hockey team faced off against their arch-rival Williamsville North, in a rematch of last season's Section VI large schools championship. A lot has changed since that title game, which the Falcons won, 2-0, but in the rematch at Northtown Center, the Spartans took advantage of a bad second period by N-W to get revenge, 5-3.
NCCC statement regarding bomb threat

This afternoon, Niagara County Community College Public Safety and the Niagara County Sheriff's Office investigated a report of a bomb threat on campus after receiving an email threatening the college.  The investigation concluded there was no threat to the campus.  We have notified our campus community.

Niagara County Sheriff's Office Receives COPS Grant

Farm structure property tax exemption extended

Recently, the New York State Legislature extended the state's real property tax exemption for structures and buildings essential to agriculture and horticultural use. Previously set to expire at the end of December, the exemption for necessary farming structures has been extended for another decade, until January of 2029.
NCSO K-9 Chief to get donation of body armor

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office K-9 Chief will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from the non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s Inc. K-9 Chief's vest is sponsored by Pam, Corey and Todd Harmon of Lockport and will be embroidered with the sentiment "In memory of Chief Craig C. Harmon." Delivery is expected within eight to 10 weeks.
GNBC scores with 'Nutcracker'

The Greater Niagara Ballet Company staged another successful production of "The Nutcracker" - the company's 51st and counting - on Friday and Saturday. Falcons wrestling soars at season-opening tournament

After starting off the season with a 76-12 win over North Tonawanda, the Niagara-Wheatfield wrestling team traveled to Webster for the Matthew Marino Invitational Wrestling Tournament. The team traveled looking to see how well they would place and ended up winning the whole tournament.
Pappas reappoints several at council meeting

Diesel technology program visits ethanol plant

The Diesel Technology students in Wes Blidy's class recently toured the Western New York Energy facility in Medina. The facility is the first ethanol plant in the northeast United States. They are a locally owned company with a mission of developing the full potential of Western New York's renewable energy resources.
Intermediate school starts new technology program

This is the first year that technology teacher Jennifer Rhoads has taught at North Tonawanda, and so far she and her students are having a great time. Not only are they getting to problem-solve with ozobots and drones, it is helping them to bring real world problem-solving challenges to life with engineering solutions.  They also learn about collaboration while encouraging them to be creative.
