Falcons Flashback: Winter sports a go at Niagara-Wheatfield

Winter athletic teams see mix of results to begin season

Christmas break may be lurking around the corner, but for now, Niagara-Wheatfield winter athletics is up and in full swing.
The boys hockey team is off to a 2-2 start this season. Since last week's publishing, the team lost 7-4 at Orchard Park and won 4-3 versus Lancaster.
In the loss to the Quakers, Chris Cacciatore scored two goals and added two assists, while Timothy Jones and Ben Foster netted goals as well. Caleb Lee and Anthony Delisanti added two assists, and Foster and Cam King also added helpers.
In the victory over Lancaster, goalie Dylan Woods made 21 saves en route to victory. The Falcons netted four goals by four different players - Cacciatore, Delisanti, Austin Durandetto and Jones - in the win.
The boys hockey team's next matchup will be in New York City this weekend versus Rye High School on Saturday and Scarsdale on Sunday.
The girls Niagara County hockey team recently began its inaugural campaign. The team has struggled out of the gate (0-5), but Sarah Jackson of N-W has scored two goals so far this season. Mackenzie Green and Amanda Jackson have also added assists for the team. The girls' next matchup is at Northtown Center versus Williamsville at 4:30 p.m. today.
The Falcons wrestling team got off to a hot start to begin the year. For a full report, see Page __.
The girls basketball team is one N-W team that has not begun regular season play. Their 2018-19 campaign begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Lockport.
The boys basketball team started slow versus Wilson Tuesday night, but came back to regain the lead before losing a nail biter, 59-55. Freshman TJ Robinson led the charge with 14 points, while seniors Davon Ware and Raejaun Smith netted 11.
The team's home-opener is at 6:30 p.m. today versus Alden. Niagara Frontier League play begins Friday for the Falcons, as they face Lockport at home at 6:30 p.m.
The boys swimming and diving team is off to a 1-1 start this season, with a win over Niagara Falls and loss versus Grand Island.
In the 125-55 win over the Wolverines, the Falcons took nine of 12 varsity races, including Joe Hahn's victory in the 500 freestyle. Hahn came close to defeating the runner up by one minute with a time of 5:54.82.
Other victors for the Falcons included the 200-yard medley relay team of Jack Baumann, Chris and Joe Dyer and Paul Wissel; Hahn in the 200 free; Wissel in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke; Chris Dyer in the 50 and 100 free; the 200 free relay team of Wissel, Dylan Loliger, and Joe and Chris Dyer; and the 400 free relay team of Andrew Rambali, Baumann, Loliger and Hahn;
Versus Grand Island, Chris Dyer won the 50 free; Joe Dyer won diving; Baumann won the 100 free; and Hahn won the 500 free.
The Falcons faced North Tonawanda Tuesday, and the team's next meet is at 5 p.m. Friday at Lockport.
The boys and girls bowling teams started their seasons off with the Niagara Frontier League kickoff tournament last Thursday. The boys finished third, while the girls finished fourth.
The boys were led by Jeremiah Zuch who rolled a high series of 620 and high game of 258, which tied for first amongst all bowlers.
The girls were led by Hope Hill who rolled a high series of 581 - second highest amongst all bowlers - and a high game of 234 - third amongst all bowlers.
Versus Lockport on Tuesday, the boys won, 6-1. Zuch and Jared Farr led the way with series' of 652 and 650, respectively.
The girls didn't have the same fortune as the boys, as they were dropped by the Lions, 6-1. Kelsey Lassman led the Falcons with a series of 518.
The bowling teams face Grand Island at 4:30 p.m. at Rapids Bowling Center.
