The Erie County Department of Social Services has announced the opening of the portal for the New York State Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP), which will provide income-qualified renters who experienced financial hardship due to COVID-19 with up to 12 months back rent and up to three months future rent. Utility arrears assistance may also be available in some cases.

The "100 Deadliest Days" is the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when fatal teen crashes increase dramatically. Nationwide, more than 7,038 people died in crashes involving teen drivers during the "100 Deadliest Days" over a 10-year period from 2010-19. That's more than seven people a day each summer.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation (S.448/A.2014) allowing veterans to qualify for state benefits after a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder, a traumatic brain injury or disclosure of military sexual trauma from any person licensed to provide health care services in New York. Previously, veterans had to be diagnosed by a provider at the Department of Veteran Affairs.

The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo and the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation announced Daycia Clarke will be the new director of youth sports initiatives at the Community Foundation and will oversee the work of Project Play Western New York moving forward. Clarke will build on the work of Bridget Niland who was hired in 2018 to launch this initiative and has accepted a new leadership opportunity in the region. Clarke joined the Project Play WNY team in January as associate director.

The smell of lilacs in the backyard. Muddy knees and properly exhausted from playing outside, only to be rewarded with a freshly baked rhubarb dessert. This was spring at my grandparent's house in Niagara County. While my grandmother is now 97 years old, and she isn't baking like she used to, the younger generation is taking over in the kitchen.

Officials at Batavia Downs announced their entry plan for the 13 outdoor concerts taking place this summer out on the historic racetrack. Similar to what is being done in other outdoor sporting and events spaces in New York, Batavia Downs will not be requiring a negative coronavirus test in order for patrons to attend the concert series. All pairs of seats will be spaced 6 feet from each other in accordance with CDC regulations.
