Slaughter: Oil companies holding up energy production

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, ranking member of the House Rules Committee, said March 11 that oil companies, not government actions, have an ability to affect the sky-high price of gasoline. She said oil companies aren't fully using their lands to tap current oil reserves and reduce the price of oil, and, that while tapping the strategic oil reserve is an option, it is not an adequate long-term solution.

USA Network, the No. 1 network in 2010 for an unprecedented five consecutive years running, is kicking off its spring lineup with two of its popular original series, "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" and "In Plain Sight." The former returns for its final season with eight all new episodes and the latter will air its fourth season with 13 episodes. Both will premiere on Sunday, May 1, at 9/8c and 10/9c, respectively.

Niagara County lawmakers called Tuesday on the State Senate to defeat an anti-Second Amendment bill that would impose annual registration fees on law-abiding gun owners living outside New York City. The bill, introduced by Sen. Eric Adams, D-Queens, would force a $15-per-firearm initial registration fee, as well as $10-per-firearm renewal fees, on owners in upstate New York and Long Island.

Slaughter announces fire company funding

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, 28th District, Fairport, has announced two grants from the federal government totaling more than $340,000 that will benefit Western New York fire companies. Smoke damages room at Barton Hotel

About 2:30 p.m. today, smoke billowing through a first floor room at the Barton Hill Hotel & Spa in Lewiston triggered a quick response from local fire companies. Trucks rushed to the scene as firefighters rushed into the four-story building to assess the damage. As of the 8 p.m. check-in, there was no official word as to what caused smoke to engulf the room.

Jeannine Alsous earned a presidential scholarship, an academic competitiveness grant and other merit-based awards from her efforts as an honors student at Lewiston-Porter High School. To help pay her way through college, she lives at home with her single mother, works between 30 and 40 hours a week, and takes out approximately $5,000 in Stafford Loans.
