The New York State Public Service Commission on Thursday approved National Grid's proposal to implement an electronic deferred-payment agreement program. The upstate electric and gas utility will be allowed to offer electronic deferred-payment agreements to residential electric and gas customers who might be struggling to pay their utility bill.

The Lewiston Kiwanis continued its support of the Steve J. Washuta Cardiac Center at Mount St. Mary's Hospital with a donation of $5,000. The funds were raised from the club's annual summer clambake and are raised in honor of the late Washuta, the founder of Modern Corporation and a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club.

Canisius College and Congressman Brian Higgins announced a federal grant from the U.S. Health and Human Services Department awarded to the college's Institute for Autism Research and department of psychology. The $379,731 federal grant, from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Aging, will fund research examining the relationship between aging and autism spectrum disorder in older adults.

Inexperienced teen drivers put everyone on the roadway at risk of a deadly crash, especially if they have teen passengers along for the ride. New research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that, when a teen driver has only teen passengers in their vehicle, the fatality rate for all people involved in a crash increased 51 percent. In contrast, when older passengers (35 or older) ride with a teen driver, overall fatality rates in crashes decreased 8 percent.

Residents at Northgate Health Care Facility in North Tonawanda joined together with volunteers from Buffalo Dream Weavers to bag lunches for the homeless. As a team, they were able to make 100 lunches, which were distributed through the Magdalene Project in Niagara Falls. Everyone had a wonderful time working to support this great cause.
