"A Celebration of Opera: Romance, Rage, and Rebellion" hits the stage at the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, as part of the larger National Opera Week, which will host more than 50 operas Oct. 26 through Nov. 4. The event at the NACC will be used as part of the effort to raise money to renovate and refurbish the NACC's Grand Theatre.
The performers have a variety of backgrounds: some are full-time musicians, while others are trained singers who have pursued other careers. Event organizers said, "This is a great opportunity to feature some hidden (and some not so hidden) treasures in Western New York, and also bring in donations for the NACC at the same time."
The recital will feature highlights from the operatic repertoire, sung in the original languages, including Mozart's "Queen of the Night" and well-known arias from "La Boheme." Spoken program notes will describe the intense emotions and dramatic characters portrayed in each set of pieces, while translations will be provided in the program.
Musicians participating include: John Clayton, tenor; Karen D'Angelo, soprano; Matthew DiCamillo, baritone; Shana DiCamillo, soprano; Tim Flynn, bass; Sarah Goldstein, soprano; Bridget Moriarty, soprano; Emily Yancey, soprano; and James Welch, pianist.
The NACC is located at 1201 Pine Ave., Niagara Falls. Visit www.thenacc.org.
