Falcons Flashback: Playoffs ready to get going

Boys volleyball scores big win over Kenmore East; girls finish undefeated

The postseason is here. As Niagara-Wheatfield fall sports teams get ready to gear up for playoff runs, here's how some teams finished up their seasons.
The boys volleyball team scored its first win this past week. Its been a tough season for the squad, but the team was successful versus Kenmore East in a 3-1 victory. After dropping the first set, the boys fought back to win the next three.
The boys played at St. Joes as the Tribune was sent to press. The boys' senior night is at 5 p.m. versus Cheektowaga. Seniors for the team include Corey Connery, Quinn Darlak, Colin Janese, Cam Miller, Caleb Ribbeck and Evan Rohring.
The girls volleyball team finished up a perfect 16-0 league season this past week. The team defeated Kenmore East and Niagara Falls, 3-0, giving them a perfect 48-0 record in sets.
The girls defeated Sweet Home, 3-0, Wednesday night on senior nigh, as well. Seniors for the team include Jenna Sonnenberg, Le'Gary Jackson, Katelyn Kostiw, Jordan Graber, Mackenzie Franks, Danielle Brochey, Tiara Borzillire, Kierston Klidonas and Brianna Walker.
The boys and girls cross country teams had a meet this past Tuesday versus North Tonawanda and Lewiston-Porter. At the meet, Victoria Achtziger-Hughes won to finish undefeated in dual meets this season.
Ahead on the schedule for cross country will be the Clarence Invite at Akron High School, Saturday. Then, to wrap up the fall season, the teams will compete in the NFL meet at Beaver Island State Park at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, then the Section VI Championships are Friday, Nov. 2.
The girls swimming and diving team recently finished up a perfect 7-0 league schedule.
The girls also won every race but one at the Niagara Frontier League B Meet for a dominating victory.
At the Lockport Diving Invitational, eighth-grader Sophia Patterson finished 12th out of 26 divers - the top finish amongst Falcons divers.
The NFL A trials were at Niagara-Wheatfield as the Tribune was sent to press. The NFL diving finals are at 5 p.m. today, and the NFL A swimming finals are at 5 p.m. Friday.
The girls tennis team was well represented at the league doubles tournament. The duos of Nicole Guldin and Mackenzie Patterson, along with Jocelyn Fike and Nikki Kwiatkowski played in the finals versus each other at the tournament, making it a win for Niagara-Wheatfield regardless.
The Section VI championships are at noon Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday.
Other notables:
•The boys soccer team was eliminated from the Section VI playoffs after a quarterfinal loss to Grand Island, 1-0.
•The girls soccer team plays North Tonawanda at 3:30 p.m. today in the quarterfinals of the Section VI Class A1 playoffs.
•The football team plays versus Williamsville South in the first round of the Chuck Funke Bowl at 11 a.m. Saturday.
