USA Niagara Development Corp. on Friday celebrated the groundbreaking for Cataract Commons, a public square or "commons" space located on Old Falls Street in downtown Niagara Falls. The project is designed to transform an empty parcel into a more usable and inviting outdoor facility that will have permanent structural seating and shade, as well as flexibility for hosting various events.

The 14th annual Lewiston GardenFest, presented by the Lewiston Garden Club, is set for Saturday, June 15, and Sunday, June 16. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days along Center Street. It includes more than 80 vendors selling flowers, plants and garden essentials, along with speakers, demonstrations, a free garden walk and a container garden contest throughout the weekend.

Norine Hibschweiler Eaton, who is being honored as a survivor in Grand Island's third annual Zumbathon, to be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at the Radisson Niagara, has had a life full of love and loss, illness, and adventure. In 1979, Norine Hibschweiler went on a "date derby" with a bunch of single friends. The date derby involved visiting bars in Buffalo and collecting souvenirs, such as matches and napkins. For her efforts, Hibschweiler won the distinction of having "the most promising future."

The Historic Palace Theatre has received a $300,000 grant from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation in support of its "Act II - A Grand Restoration" renovation project. This gift will support the Palace's larger $2.8 million "Act II" project, which is already underway, with renovations to the outer lobby, and restoration and repairs to interior plaster completed last October.
