The New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) on Monday announced the launch of a new alcohol awareness campaign to caution people of the warning signs of excessive alcohol use, and where to go to get help. In addition to warning signs, the campaign will also help offer alternatives to using alcohol for stress management, at a time when the danger of excessive alcohol use is increased as a result of the pandemic.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced more than $328 million in home heating aid is now available for low- and middle-income New Yorkers who need assistance keeping their homes warm during the coming winter season. Applications are now being accepted for the Home Energy Assistance Program, which provides federal funding to assist homeowners and renters with their heating costs during the cold weather months.

The Rev. Michael J. McGivney, the Connecticut-born founder of the Knights of Columbus, will take one step closer to sainthood on Saturday, Oct. 31, when he is beatified in a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, Connecticut. McGivney entered Our Lady of Angels Seminary, the precursor of Niagara University, in 1871 and attended through the summer of 1872.

Applications for Home Energy Assistance Program ("HEAP") regular benefits will be accepted beginning Monday, Nov. 2. This year, in light of the virus-related risks related to public gatherings, the Erie County Department of Social Services is strongly encouraging applicants to apply online or to utilize other remote channels to apply. New York's new rear seat belt law goes into effect Sunday, Nov. 1, requiring all passengers to wear a seat belt in the back seat of a motor vehicle, including passengers of ridesharing services such as Uber and Lyft. Until now, passengers over age 16 were not required to wear seat belts in the rear seat in New York. The new law, championed by AAA New York State, will save lives and prevent injuries across state roadways by requiring all occupants in a motor vehicle to buckle up.
