Cuomo announces education and equitable enforcement campaign to boost pedestrian safety

Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently announced law enforcement will be participating in the "Operation See! Be Seen!" pedestrian safety campaign from June 11-24 to decrease pedestrian-involved crashes.

During a recent ceremony at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park, Congressman Brian Higgins honored the service and sacrifice of Lance Cpl. Frederick Ziomek. He was joined by Tom Thompson, president of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 77; and Paul Marzello, president and CEO of the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park. They marked the addition of Ziomek to the Western New York Vietnam Veterans Monument.
Niagara County announces upcoming closing of portion of Lockport Road

Niagara County Department of Public Works Commissioner Garret Meal on Monday announced the pending closing of Lockport Road, just east of Walmore Road. Electronic message boards were erected Monday, warning travelers the road is scheduled to be closed, except for local traffic, beginning on Monday, June 21. Motorists will need to follow the detour route from Ward Road to Niagara Falls Boulevard to Walmore Road.
Following Higgins' request, CBP launches virtual interviews for Trusted Traveler Program renewals

Congressman Brian Higgins welcomed news U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) launched a new pilot program to allow Trusted Traveler Program members to conduct renewal interviews virtually. The initiative comes after Higgins sent a letter requesting CBP and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) resume NEXUS interviews, despite ongoing travel restrictions between the U.S. and Canada, by allowing the required in-person interview to be held online.

(SMI), a Western New York nonprofit organization, will serve as operator to the region's first e-bike library program, free to eligible participants interested in testing a new and innovative programming model. The E-Bike Library Project is a collaboration of partners, funders and residents to establish "e-bike libraries" through a community-led approach spearheaded by the Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative (CHNFC) and East Side Bike Club, a program of Buffalo United Front (BUF).

Applications open for $800 million COVID-19 Pandemic Small Business Recovery Grant Program

The program reimburses New York small businesses with grants of up to $50,000 for COVID-19-related expenses incurred between March 1, 2020, and April 1, 2021. Grants will be awarded to small and micro businesses and small for-profit independent arts and cultural organizations, with priority being given to socially and economically disadvantaged business owners, including minority- and women-owned business enterprises, service-disabled veteran-owned businesses and veteran-owned businesses, and businesses located in economically distressed communities.

Albright-Knox Public Art Initiative debuts 'Works, from Home' mural project

In April 2020, the Albright-Knox's Public Art Initiative asked 16 local artists to respond to the initial lockdown requirements of the pandemic. To build community spirit, the museum sent artmaking materials to these artists at their home studios, and they worked to produce a 16-piece collaborative mural. The piece, now located at 43 W. Chippewa St., "speaks to individual and collective experiences of the pandemic."

DEC cites Cascades facility for noxious odors; company working to find long-term solution

Recently, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation served Cascades Containerboard Packaging Inc. a notice of violation after receiving numerous complaints from residents in the Town of Niagara, City of Niagara Falls and even as far away as Sanborn throughout the month of May. The agency said the company was in violation of Air Pollution Control Law, Article 19 of the Environmental Conservation Law (ECL).

City of Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino has announced that, in honor of the late Mayor Vincenzo "Vince" Anello, Niagara Falls will be lit in green, white and red at 10:15 p.m. Thursday, for a 15-minute duration. In addition, all flags at city buildings have been lowered to half-staff during this time.
