Telescopes will be scanning the skies at the Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center in Hamburg on Saturday, Oct. 16, beginning at 6 p.m. Telescopes, with filters, will be available to view sunspots and solar flares before sunset. After dark, telescopes will focus on the Penn Dixie Skies to view a first-quarter moon, Jupiter and Uranus in the east, the famous double-star cluster in Perseus, E.T. star cluster, and a variety of other constellations.

ABC Family and Starz Media will once again celebrate the holidays together, as the network bought the U.S. cable TV rights to the new live-action holiday movie, "The Dog Who Saved Christmas Vacation." The film will air as part of ABC Family's November "Countdown to 25 Days of Christmas" programming event.

NBC's top-rated summer series "America's Got Talent" begins its nationwide search for the hottest and most unique performers to compete in the upcoming sixth season of the talent competition series. The open auditions begin this weekend -- Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 9-10, in Denver. Later this year and in early 2011, the series will also be in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Seattle and Houston.

Many older adults say they don't exercise because they don't have the strength and stamina for it. But this is a vicious cycle. The lack of physical activity actually causes older adults to lose even more of their strength and stamina.

An angler creel survey on Lake Ontario tributaries will be conducted this fall on 23 tributary streams ranging from the Niagara River eastward to the Black River in Jefferson County. Major stream fisheries the survey will include are: Eighteen Mile Creek, Oak Orchard Creek, Sandy Creek, Irondequoit Creek, Oswego River, Salmon River, North and South Sandy Creeks and the Black River.

Approximately 30,000 adult pheasants will be released on lands open to public hunting for the upcoming fall pheasant-hunting season, according to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Pete Grannis.The pheasant hunting season begins on Oct. 1 in northern and eastern portions of New York; Oct. 16 in central and western portions; and Nov. 1 on Long Island.
