The beginning of October isn't just about the changes in the weather or the harvest on the local farms. The beginning of October means Fire Prevention Week is around the corner.

With that in mind, Chief Jeff Tower and members of the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co. invite the community to visit its annual open house, Saturday, Oct. 9, from noon to 4 p.m. The event takes place rain or shine at the firehall, 625 Nancy Price Drive (Third Street across from Veterans Park).

This year's lineup includes activities for the kids, tours of the hall, information on volunteer opportunities as well as several information stations for home and business fire safety.

"YVFC members will be on hand to teach proper fire extinguisher use, hand out File of Life personal information packets and treat the family to a ride on a fire truck," Tower says. He reports that members of YVFC's sanctioned Explorer Post from Boy Scout Troop 829 will be assisting with several activities and able to answer questions about participation in the post for teenagers. Snacks will be provided by the YVFC exempts organization and the YVFC Ladies Auxiliary.

"We have invited some of our friends and neighbors to help us spread the word. The Youngstown Lions Club will have available reflective signs to help responders find an address in an emergency. Also helping out this year will be members of Youngstown's Girl Scouts," Tower adds.

In addition, sportsman raffle tickets will be available for YVFC's upcoming raffle on Oct. 31. "Please save some time for the volunteers who donate so much of their time to watching over our community," says Tower.

For further information, call the firehall at 745-3324.
