Center Street blaze: Business owners still in shock after last week's fire

An early morning fire on Nov. 30 ravaged 744, 746 and 748 Center St., the site of The Vintage Barber, Soully Created and Sue's Frame of Mind. In battling the blaze, first responders from Lewiston Fire Co. No. 1 and members from a half-dozen supporting companies had to break glass, pull off siding, cut into the roof and pump in copious amounts of water.
DOT to keep Center Street speed limit at 30 mph

The New York State Department of Transportation has denied the Village of Lewiston's request to lower the speed limit on Center Street from 30 mph to 25 mph.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday signed legislation that will require residential health care facilities to "swiftly update residents as well as their family members and guardians when an infection is detected within the facility. It also requires nursing homes to have a plan in place to accommodate exposed or infected residents to stop the spread of the infection."

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday issued a proclamation designating December as STOP-DWI Month, and announced a series of targeted initiatives to prevent impaired driving across the state. Throughout December, the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee will launch a new anti-drinking and driving public service announcement. GTSC will also launch a $1 million "Don't Drive High" public awareness campaign, which will use funding from the New York State Office of Cannabis Management.

At 3:13 a.m. Wednesday, Niagara County Sheriff's Office Deputy F. Bork attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle in the area of Woodland Avenue and Saint Joseph Road in the Town of Niagara. NCSO said, "The operator refused to comply and a vehicle pursuit ensued throughout the Town of Niagara. Ultimately, in the area of Sadlo Drive and Bellreng Drive, the two occupants fled from the vehicle on foot into the neighborhood.
