The sights and sounds of an 18th century fortress will mingle with the smells of a good, old-fashioned barbecue when Old Fort Niagara hosts a pig roast to benefit the historic site on Saturday, Sept. 25. From 5:30 p.m. until sunset, the public can enjoy food, music, an 18th century puppet show, 18th century games, a cannon firing at sunset and a variety of other activities for all ages.

Members of the Lewiston Advisory Committee met this week to discuss the people-moving impact of the Lewiston Art Festival, Historic Lewiston Jazz Festival and Kiwanis Peach Festival. The consensus of the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce subgroup was more parking is needed in Lewiston, more organization among festival/event participants would be helpful, and additional manpower (especially police) would make for a safer community.
Cabbage Festival seeks participants

The Town of Porter hosts the annual Cabbage Festival for the seventh year, in cooperation with the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce, on Sunday, Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ransomville Fire Co. on Route 93.
NYPA wildlife festival next weekend

The New York Power Authority's Niagara Power Project is hosting the 25th anniversary of its Wildlife Festival in cooperation with the Niagara County Federation of Conservation Clubs on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 25 and 26, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission and parking are free and the show will go on rain or shine. A variety of food will be available from a selection of local youth groups' concessions.
Harvest Festival highlights upcoming River Region fall schedule

Celebrate the beginning of fall in the historic Village of Lewiston with the work of Western New York's talented crafters and jewelry artists. The Lewiston Harvest Festival & Craft Show will take place on Saturday, Sept. 25, and Sunday, Sept. 26, along Center Street. The festival runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days and is free and open to the public. More than 75 crafters will showcase their artwork, jewelry, woodwork, candles and handmade crafts throughout the weekend.
Chamber opts for change

For the second time in two years, the board of directors of the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce has decided to take its public leadership position in a different direction. In a statement released this week, chamber board of directors Chairman George Osborne said a vote was cast Sept. 8 to not renew David Lacki's contract as president.

Grand Island Town Board Downsizing Special Election A referendum to reduce the Grand Island Town Board from five members to three will take place Thursday, Sept. 23, at the Grand Island Fire Co. headquarters, 2275 Baseline Road, between the hours to 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. A "yes" vote will reduce the board from a supervisor and four councilmen to a supervisor and two councilmen.
